Girl Scouts Make Visit To Wall Township Seniors

The scouts danced, sang and wrote inspiring messages for the residents of Wall Township’s Sunnyside Manor during their latest trip.

WALL, NJ – Girls around the world celebrated National Girl Scouts Day on March 12 in a tradition that builds courage, confidence, and character, ultimately making the world a better place. In Wall Township, Girl Scout Troop 795 based out of St. Catharine’s school in Spring Lake visited Sunnyside Manor in Wall Township on National Girl Scouts Day to spread joy to the residents with a contact-free event.

Held outdoors in the community’s courtyard gazebo, the Girl Scouts danced, sang, wrote inspiring messages in sidewalk chalk and – of course – sold boxes of cookies to the residents of Sunnyside Manor.

“We have a great relationship with Troop 795. With COVID-19, the event was a little different this year, but our traditions remain the same,” said John F. Keane, Jr., Vice President of Sunnyside Manor. “They provided an afternoon of inspiration and wonderful entertainment for our residents. You could see the joy in everyone’s faces as the troop performed.”

“I have a soft spot for the Girl Scouts as I was part of a local troop when I was a young girl. We even have a few residents here at Sunnyside who were Girl Scouts themselves, so it was a great time to reminisce and see the future leaders of tomorrow,” added MaryEllen Keane, Vice President of Sunnyside Manor.

The troop has fostered a lasting relationship with Sunnyside Manor for the past three years, with both groups enjoying the upbeat social environment that visits provide, according to troop leaders Gayle Foley and Csilla Scardino.

“”We reached out to Sunnyside Manor in 2019, looking for ways that our girls can interact with the residents. We try to teach the girls empathy and compassion and show them ways that they can make a difference to people and how their presence can make someone’s day,” Foley and Scardino said.

“We love to focus time on one organization, so that the girls get a real understanding of what goes on and can join the dots and see the whole picture when we do projects. We hope once COVID is behind us we can do more things with the residents of Sunnyside.”
