As Veterans Day approaches, we celebrate the brave service members who fought for our country. We are especially proud to honor those living right in our community. Among Sunnyside Manor residents, there are 25 veterans, whose service includes World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

It is our privilege to support our resident veterans, as we are reminded of their sacrifice and their dedication to serving our country.

Following are this year’s events at Sunnyside Manor in observance of Veterans Day.

Flag Raising

The flag raising on Veterans Day and Memorial Day is a special tradition at Sunnyside Manor. As the flag rises in the morning, resident veterans gather outside while one of our staff plays the national anthem on guitar. The solemn pride of all rising to honor the flag in the morning light makes this one of our most moving and poignant traditions.

Welcoming the Military Order of the Purple Heart

The week of Veterans Day, we welcome the Military Order of the Purple Heart, Shore Chapter 701, to a social with our resident veterans. This event offers veterans time to socialize with a community of others who share their experience. The Military Order of the Purple Heart is both a presence here on Veterans Day, and they also organize a yearly outing for residents to a Lakewood BlueClaws baseball game in the spring.

Veterans Day Celebration

On Veterans Day itself, we invite family and friends to join us in celebrating the veterans in our community. We’ll be joined by local favorite musician Joey Sudyka for timeless, patriotic favorites – and of course, plenty of delightful refreshments for everyone.

We’re honored to have the opportunity to say, “thank you,” to the brave veterans who served our country, and who have chosen to call Sunnyside Manor home.
