How to Have a Meaningful Visit: Strategies for Visiting Loved Ones with Memory Loss

Watch the video: learn from an expert how to have meaningful visits with a loved one experiencing memory loss.

Recently, we invited Amy Matthews, Dementia Coach, to talk with families in our community and answer questions about visiting loved ones with memory loss.

Amy is the “expert’s expert” on creating and sustaining healthy relationships with people experiencing memory loss. For decades, her practical tips, guidance, and coaching have helped families increase fulfilment and reduce stress around visits, whether in a memory care neighborhood or at home.

This presentation is part of our “Caring for the Caregiver” series. If you weren’t able to attend the live session, the recording is below for you to watch any time.

Learn from Amy how to relate to your loved one in a new way, and – for those whose loved ones live in a memory care neighborhood – how care staff can be part of your “care team.”

(We’ve included time stamps for select topics.)

  • How Alzheimer’s affects the brain and changes communication: 2:10
  • Communication “do’s and don’ts”: 23:20
  • What to do on a visit (in-person or virtual): 41:05
  • How to manage challenging visits: 1:03:45
  • Reducing caregiver stress: 1:06:50

“The meaning is in the moment you’re visiting. Not before, not after. It’s never about the frequency or intensity of visits… People can sense [your] presence and that can be just as meaningful as the things they used to do.” – Amy Matthews

This event is part of our ongoing caregiver series. Events are held quarterly, in-person and/or virtual, and are open to the public. Upcoming event topics include:
