Holiday Lights: 5 Tips for a Lighter, Brighter Holiday Season

Get inspired: Five tips for greater peace of mind, less stress, and more meaningful moments for caregivers this holiday season.

The holidays can be truly dazzling, with lights, decorations, and fun family traditions.

At the same time, the holidays also bring a lot of planning, errands, and decisions to make, especially when you’re looking after a senior loved one and taking care of other family responsibilities.

During the busy holiday season – and in an already busy season of life – it’s normal for caregivers to look toward a lighter approach.

As you’re heading out to see the holiday lights this year, consider embracing some holiday “lights” of your own: lighter versions of holiday experiences that are still meaningful, personal, and feel good.

Here are five ideas for simplifying holiday tasks and celebrations. Use these as inspiration for holidays that hold more peace, less stuff, and more time for what matters most.

1. Play Favorites.

Wouldn’t it be nice to spend the holidays surrounded by just your favorite things? When it’s time to decorate and get into the holiday spirit, play favorites: instead of finding places for each and every decoration in the bin, pull out just your favorite and most meaningful items, and give them a place of honor.

This lightens the number of decisions to be made and puts the focus on what’s enjoyable and meaningful.

2. More Experiences, Less Stuff.

Time with people you care about is a gift for both of you. Instead of physical gifts (and all the wrapping, storing, and organizing that go with them), make experiences your “light” version.

  • Invite friends for coffee dates – even if it’s to catch up after the holiday rush.
  • Make a date to fill out holiday cards with a family member or friend.
  • Bring takeout to your loved one’s home for a quiet lunch or dinner.

This means a lighter load of “stuff” to wrap, store, and organize, and it has connection with important people built in.

If more traditional gift-giving is the norm in your circle, there are plenty of ways to offer experiences as gifts, too: think gift cards to restaurants, streaming subscriptions, and passes to favorite event venues.

3. Try Lighter Gatherings.

If you’ve always been the holiday host, consider what a “light” version of your usual plans might look like – one that can meet your family and you where you are right now. Families change from year to year, and their traditions can evolve meaningfully, too.

Look to options that are a lighter lift and fit your family and your energy level. For example, a brunch instead of a formal dinner. Or a more relaxed, open-house style gathering where people can drop in, which can be especially welcoming for seniors who have a tough time with nighttime events or who may not want to feel “on” all day.

This “holiday light” lightens the logistics of more formal, evening events while making room for families to gather and enjoy the traditions everyone loves, whether that’s one or two special family recipes or a much-loved traditional activity.

4. Set a Timer for the Big Stuff.

When time feels tight and other responsibilities are calling, getting started on a big holiday task – even one you enjoy! – can be tough. Lighten up big projects by taking them 15 minutes at a time.

When it’s time to wrap gifts, decorate, or get the house ready for visitors, put on your favorite podcast or holiday playlist to set the mood, set a timer for 15 minutes, and do as much as you can. When you hear the jingle-jangle of the timer, it’s time to stop. Admire your progress and take a rest. Then, if you’ve got some momentum going, set the timer again.

5. Step away from your phone.

The abundance of holiday sale emails and “perfect” holiday photos on social feeds can quickly go from “ho-ho-ho” to a ho-ho-whole lot! When social feeds and emails start to feel more stressful than joyful, it’s time for a reset. Pick an afternoon or evening to put your phone down. Instead of scrolling:

  • Watch a movie.
  • Revisit your favorite hobby, craft, or project.
  • Get out your pets’ favorite toys and have playtime.
  • Take a nap.
  • Bundle up and go for a walk to see the lights in your neighborhood.

This “holiday light” reduces the demands on your attention and allows you to focus on what’s enjoyable, meaningful, or most needed. For caregivers especially, even one night away from constant alerts can offer a reset, and a return to family responsibilities with more calm and clarity.

Caregiving can add layers of planning and decision-making to an already busy season. Embracing the “holiday lights” – lighter décor, lighter schedules, and lighter expectations – can help create a season that shines without burning anyone out.

Most of all, it gives you and those around you space to focus on what really matters: connection, comfort, and peace of mind.
