Good Company, Good Health: The Value of Shared Experiences in Senior Living

Good company supports good health. Often, it’s the small moments together that make a big difference.

They do their research, and ask great questions about care quality when we see them for tours of our community.

And yet, there’s often something more they know would benefit their loved one that doesn’t quite fit into a single question.

For many families, that something more is connection. And real connection is more than living among peers. Real connection is about sharing experiences.

For seniors especially, real connection and shared experiences can take some extra support. Read on to learn more about what makes an experience “shared,” and how a senior living community uniquely supports sharing meaningful experiences.

What Makes an Experience “Shared?”

What exactly makes an experience “shared?” Being near someone is different from having a moment of connection with them. A moment of connection can be big or small – even a wave hello in the hallway each morning from the same person creates a bond over time.

Whether it’s a conversation over coffee, or enjoying a show and talking about it afterward, these moments of connection, company, and interest create a sense of belonging.

Support for Connection and Shared Experience

Research on aging and wellbeing consistently points to the importance of connection and shared experiences. Over time, small moments of connection and belonging add up to something more powerful. Seniors who have regular, meaningful social connections tend to have better cognitive health, a stronger sense of purpose, and better overall wellbeing.

But for many seniors, natural opportunities for connection and shared experiences gradually thin out, as friends move away and driving becomes more challenging. Families may begin to sense that their loved one would feel better with more company, and wonder what that would look like.

In a senior living community, that looks like a calendar of programs to join with others, and informal opportunities to socialize, right outside their door. That’s why experts recommend checking into a community’s activities programming as part of the questions you should ask during your research process.

The support for shared experiences makes a real difference. As one resident’s son told us, “My mother is thriving and has done complete turnaround in her life. She has told me numerous times how much she loves living there. She also said that the residents and staff are all friendly and she feels so at home.”

Shared Experiences and Connection, On and Off the Calendar

Meaningful shared experiences happen on and off the calendar – at memorable planned events and celebrations, and in the small moments of connection that bring warmth to daily life.

At Sunnyside Manor, we’re proud of our activities program, and how residents look forward to fun outings, live entertainment, happy hours, and community-wide traditions.

In fact, this year’s annual summer BBQ, which brings together residents, families, staff, and friends, had our biggest turnout ever. We’re reminded that at every age, people are drawn to these moments of togetherness.

And, day after day, meaningful shared experiences also happen in unplanned moments, like a shared laugh over dinner or a conversation that starts in the hallway and turns into a friendship.

These informal, everyday moments at Sunnyside Manor are spontaneous and also intentionally supported. Our approach – from our programming right down to the physical layout of our community – supports natural opportunities for residents to cross paths and connect. Connection is always there when it’s wanted, just outside each resident’s apartment door.

Those shared experiences extend to staff as well. Many of our team members have been part of our community for five, ten, or fifteen years. And some, like Marisha and Joanna, have been here for decades. That kind of longevity means residents and their families are always among familiar faces, and have time to get to know each other, share stories, and connect.

The Family Connection

Families often tell us that watching a loved one build new friendships is one of the most welcome surprises after a move to senior living. Neighbors become friends, and shared interests turn into an event to look forward to each week.

And families are surprised, too, that senior living gives them time to share more experiences with their loved one, rather than managing the logistics of care. As one resident’s daughter said, “I can be a daughter again.”

All of us, at every age, build our closest relationships around shared experiences. What changes over time is that creating those moments takes intention and thoughtful support.

At Sunnyside Manor, we believe shared experiences are a natural part of everyday life. Whether it’s through a planned activity or a spontaneous conversation over dinner, shared experiences and the connections they bring make life sweeter for residents, families, and our whole community.
